In May, April Boyd represented Natchez as a member of the Adams Christian County School slow-pitch softball state champions. Next week in Knoxville, Tenn., she’ll be the lone Natchez player on a squad trying to bring a national championship to Mississippi.

Boyd is a member of the Margo’s Cargo softball team, which is based out of Florence, Miss. In Knoxville, Boyd and her teammates will battle for the National Softball Association’s slow-pitch tournament title.

&uot;I know we can win if we go in with the right attitude,&uot; said Boyd. &uot;We don’t have any weak spots.&uot;

Margo’s Cargo is ranked No. 3 in the country by the United States Specialty Sports Association and No.1 in Mississippi. The team, which is 33-6 this summer, plays in tournaments throughout the state in the summer and then gears up for the two national tournaments in July.

The NSA and the USSSA both hold tournaments, which are considered the top two national events. Margo’s Cargo will participate in the NSA tourney.

Boyd has been playing ball since she was five-years old. She played for the Natchez Bombers program, but due to a change in age restrictions, Boyd joined the Margo’s Cargo program.

Last year, Boyd helped lead the team finished in fifth place in the NSA tournament.

The tournament takes place July 12-15.
