FERRIDAY, La. — Ferriday native Glenda Price Lewis found a fun atmosphere living on the banks of the Lake St. John.

&uot;One thing about this lake, it won’t let you get old,&uot; Lewis said.

After moving to the lake in 1992, she soon became involved in the Blessing of the Flotilla — an annual boat parade that occurs around the Fourth of July. It will take place this year at 2 p.m. Saturday. The first year Lewis participated in the event, she rode on a float decorated in a Caribbean calypso theme.

&uot;We just had a wonderful time and I realized this was something Concordia Parish needed real bad,&uot; Lewis said.

In the years to follow, she served as the flotilla queen and became involved in the coordinating of the parade. She also served as chairperson of the Lake St. John Flotilla Committee for the past several years when people began to worry the Blessing of the Flotilla might come to an end.

&uot;I just took it and ran with it,&uot; Lewis said. &uot;There’s a lot more involved than most people think.&uot;

She is not the chairperson this year but still helps out in an advisory manner. The event helps promote and maintain the beauty of the lake — a section of Concordia Parish over which Lewis feels a sense of ownership.

&uot;I wouldn’t do anything else; this is my lake,&uot; said Lewis who jokes about the section of the lake that belongs to her.
