The Natchez Dixie Boys 14-year-old team got in a little rut two nights ago against Summit. The club only notched five hits, with no Natchez player having a multiple hit game.

Things were quite a bit different last night in the team’s contest versus Wilk-Amite.

Natchez pounded out 15 hits in a 14-5 victory over Wilk-Amite, led by Drew Burns and Andrew Ellard’s three-hit games and Jeremy Davis’ two home runs.

&uot;We hit better. A lot better,&uot; said Davis, who clubbed a two-run shot and a three-run dinger. &uot;That’s really what we need to do. If we hit, everything else falls into place.&uot;

Natchez plays Summit again tonight at 7 p.m. If Natchez wins, another game will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. If Summit wins, it goes to the state tournament in Kosciusko.

In the first two innings, it didn’t appear that things would fall into place. Wilk-Amite righthander Bill Walsh limited Natchez to one run on no hits.

Dustin Case scored the game’s only run on an RBI-groundout by Burns in the first. But in the third, Ellard smacked a double to left-center, Case singled and Davis walked to load the bases. Burns followed with a round-tripper over the centerfield fence to put Natchez up 5-0.

&uot;He just gave me the perfect pitch,&uot; said Burns, who ended up with six RBI. &uot;I didn’t think it was gone.&uot;

&uot;Big hit by Drew,&uot; said coach Joe Eidt. &uot;It kind of got things going tonight.&uot;

Eidt added that the big difference between last night’s game and the Summit game was the fact that his club &uot;took advantage of the runners getting on base.&uot;

Natchez tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning with Davis’s first home run netting two runs.

He had an encore performance the next inning, as he drove a fastball down the left field line for a three-run homer.

&uot;Everybody was like, ‘Don’t swing for the fences,’ and I was like, ‘I’m not,’&uot; Davis said.

Natchez scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Jaime Morris lined one up the box for a RBI-single. Ellard followed that with his third double of the game and a RBI. Burns then collected his third hit of the game with a RBI-base knock.

At the beginning of the game, Wilk-Amite coaches planned on protesting the contest because Natchez coaches were not dressed in the regulation full uniform. The coaches wore the uniform tops with shorts rather than regulation baseball pants.

In response, Eidt and his staff changed into baseball pants- with Eidt changing on the field in front of the Natchez dugout – and the protest was removed. Previously, no team had protested neither Natchez nor Franklin County games, whose coaches also wore shorts.
