The competitor likened it to &uot;golf, with a shotgun.&uot;

He’s not talking about some new techno, sci-fi sport. No, he’s talking about sporting clays.

Two Natchez residents traveled to Blue Springs near Tupelo on Saturday to compete in the Mississippi Sporting Clays Championship at White Tail Ridge Shooting Center.

Among those were Tim McCary, who said before leaving for the tournament that the tournaments are fun to compete in.

McCary shot a 65 out of 100 in Class E. Brian Calloway scored a 60 out of 100 in Class C.

&uot;The target presentation was extremely difficult,&uot; said McCary, who said he was used to shooting in the low- to mid 70s. &uot;They were fast and low targets.&uot;

At tournaments like the one McCary competed in Saturday, shooters are grouped, or &uot;squaded,&uot; into groups of five shooters. Those shooters may be master shooters or an e-class shooter, or beginner.

&uot;You can be squaded with shooters in the master’s class or other classes,&uot; McCary said. &uot;You can request to be squaded with the group that you came to the tournament with if you want.&uot;

McCary also participated in last year’s event in Picayune.
