Natchez no-hit by Carolina

SULPHUR, La. – After scoring 30 runs in their first two games, it appeared that no team could stop the Natchez Dixie Boys 13-year-old All-Stars, the Mississippi state champions, in the Dixie Boys World Series.

North Carolina left-handed pitcher Dustin Medlin, however, did just that, as he pitched a complete-game no-hitter and struck out nine batters to lead his team to a 10-0 win Monday night.

&uot;This was what I was worried about – staying up, staying up, staying up,&uot; said coach Tim Foster. &uot;Tonight wasn’t the night we could get fired up.&uot;

Natchez drops to the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament and will play Tennessee at 5 p.m. today.

North Carolina got back-to-back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the second inning from Cameron Spears, Marquis Smith and O’Neal Thompson, whose one-bagger scored Spears.

North Carolina scored two more times in the inning on an RBI groundout by Daniel Britt and an error.

Medlin was sensational on the mound for North Carolina, as he kept the Natchez batters off-balance throughout the game. He allowed only four base runners, two on walks and two on hit batsmen.

&uot;We were flat with our bats,&uot; Foster said. &uot;He (Medlin) was real good, but he was nothing we couldn’t hit.&uot;

Natchez had a chance to get back in the game with Chris Seeger at third and Benji Maher at first with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

But Seeger and Maher tried a double steal, but Seeger was tagged out at the plate to preserve the shutout.

North Carolina scored its final seven runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Ryan McCleney reached on a lead-off walk and later scored on a Dustin Williamson double. Medlin, who reached first after being hit by a pitch, later scored on a wild pitch. Williamson scored on a double by Smith, who then scored on a ground-rule double by Thompson.

Thompson then scored on a single by Devon Brown. Jordan McPherson, who reached on a walk, scored on an error.

Appropriately, it was Medlin who brought home the game-ending run on an RBI single to scoreNatchez no-hit by Carolina

Brown.
