NATCHEZ &045; That’s the thing about errors: they sure can make a good pitcher look bad.
Natchez High’s Bulldogs allowed the first three Meridian batters of the game reach by error, and from there the Wildcats took a 12-1 win in five innings Tuesday at Chester Willis Field in a Division 5-5A contest.
The miscues in the field spoiled a nice outing by Drew Kossum, who threw all five innings for the Bulldogs.
&uot;He did a good job pitching,&uot; NHS head coach Charlie Williams said. &uot;We just made a few errors behind him, and he hurt himself in certain situations. Overall he pitched a good game. He’s doing a good job, but we’re not getting the defense behind him like we should. But we’ve got to keep improving.&uot;
The Bulldogs had trouble at the plate as well and scored just one run in the third inning. Leon Stewart tripled and later scored on an infield single by Matthew Henderson.
&uot;We’re just not hitting the ball,&uot; Williams said. &uot;That’s the problem. I don’t know what to do. Meridian has a real solid team. They attacked the ball pretty well. They caught up with (Kossum) in the latter innings. We had to have given them at least six unearned runs.&uot;
Brookhaven 8, Huntington 2
BROOKHAVEN &045; The Cougars took advantage of a tiring Huntington pitching staff and jumped on starter Bronson Rhodes early to take a lead.
The Cougars got a run in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to jump ahead.
&uot;We asked a lot of Bronson,&uot; Huntington coach Michael McAnally said. &uot;We played a doubleheader Saturday, and he threw 102 pitches against Centreville. We knew he wasn’t going to have his best stuff. I thought we played well defensively.&uot;
The Hounds scored their two runs in the top of the fifth off Brookhaven starter Ben Sandifer.
&uot;We’re having trouble scoring runs,&uot; McAnally said. &uot;We’ve scored 24 runs in eight games. We’ve got to score more than that at this level to win games.&uot;
Cathedral at McComb tourney
MCCOMB &045; Sometimes the momentum spills over. Other times, well, everything just spills out over the table.
The Cathedral Green Wave were impressive Monday in the McComb tournament with a 7-4 win over Lawrence County, but in the second game Brookhaven dumped the Green Wave 16-7 thanks to 10 Cathedral errors.
The Panthers rung up three runs in the first inning thanks to two Cathedral errors, and things went awry from there.
&uot;Everything fell apart from there,&uot; Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;It looked like errors were contagious. Everybody made their share. It wasn’t any one person. We just had a bad game.&uot;
The Panthers scored another in the second for a 4-0 lead before Cathedral got on the board thanks to a Wyler Murray solo home run. The Panthers pumped the lead up to 14-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Green Wave scored six runs to keep playing.
Chris Norris had a two-run double in that inning to score Drew Burns and Chris Rasco. The Wave sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and had the bases loaded with one out before the Panthers brought their starter back in and got two strikeouts to end the inning.
&uot;It looked like we were satisfied with winning one game,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;It was the first time we had one a game in that tournament in three or four years. We weren’t as focused and ready to play the second game as we were the first game.&uot;
Cathedral freshman Corey Walker went 4 2/3 innings while allowing seven runs on just four hits. Andrew Kaiser and Preston Hicks came on in relief.
In the first game Te Riley went the distance on the mound and struck out 11. Garrett Jones’ two-run homer in the first game Cathedral gave an early lead.
Jeremy Davis doubled in Norris and Jones in the fourth inning to highlight a four-run fourth.
