NATCHEZ &045; Most would peruse Adams County Christian’s roster, see a lineup with one senior and write the Rebels off to rebuilding.
But with four freshmen in the starting lineup Friday night, AC made its case that youth is well served for the here and now.
Behind the strength of a complete game pitching performance and a three-run blast that put the Rebels up for good, AC exacted some revenge to win the second game, 6-3, and sweep a doubleheader from fifth-ranked Parklane for their first district wins.
&uot;Even without the ninth graders, we have sophomores who are playing that have never lettered,&uot; Rebels head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;Everybody who is out there hustling and not dragging their heads when things don’t go their way will have a chance to play.&uot;
Tim Foster went the distance for the win in his first career district MPSA 2-3A start for the Rebels (7-4), striking out seven and walking just one batter.
Fellow young one Benji Maher was 2 for 4, including a monster home run in the fifth inning with two runners on base to put AC up 5-2.
Foster led off the Rebel half of the fifth with a double over the Parklane centerfielder’s head and up against the wall.
With Ray Simpson in to run for Foster, Jamie Morris dribbled an infield single between the shortstop and third baseman to put runners at the corners with one out.
With an 0-1 count, Maher turned on an inside pitch from Pioneer Blake Robinson, who took the loss, and flew the left field fence by more than 10 yards.
&uot;(Maher) didn’t even play the first game for us, but it comes in the second and gets us over the hump,&uot; Morris said. &uot;Everybody is contributing for us right now and the most important thing is playing team baseball.&uot;
Maher’s ellipse into the night put AC up to stay as the Pioneers mustered one run in the top of the sixth, but left two men stranded when Foster fanned the seventh, ninth and top men in the order.
Jeremy Wallace got the start for Parklane and managed to control things early, yielding just one run in the second when the Rebels left three lonely ducks on the pond.
&uot;We had some chances early on to bust the game wide open and we didn’t do it,&uot; Morris said. &uot;Hopefully the kids are learning that nobody is going to give you a thing out here, especially in district play.&uot;
The Pioneers plated two in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage. Catcher J.R Farnham led off with a single through the left side of the infield.
After Rusty Rayborn was retired on a spectacular diving grab by AC right fielder David Trisler, who almost doubled off Farnham, Lane Moore pushed a single to right.
Brett Hicks picked Farnham up with a groundout and Judd Honea scored Moore on an infield flair that Jaime Morris couldn’t catch up to.
The Rebels got the run back in their half when Dustin Case doubled home David Alton New to knot the score 2-all.
&uot;These kids are battle tested and we have somebody new step up each and every night,&uot; Morris said. &uot;Parklane is a great team. Probably the best two-strike hitting team I’ve seen in a while. Our philosophy is to come inside with two strikes and tonight it paid off.&uot;
Foster, who gave up nine hits with all three runs earned, helped himself out at the plate with a 3-for-4 night, including a pair of doubles.
ACCS 5, Parklane 4
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Glenn Williams sent a two-run homer skyward to stake the Rebels out to an early 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers got one back in the second when Blake Robinson scored from third on a wild pitch from AC starter and winner Douglas Davis.
Williams scored Walker for the second time in the game in the fourth when he reached base on a throwing error by the catcher after laying down a bunt.
Williams scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth on a David Trisler single.
&uot;I got two complete games from my pitchers tonight, which was big,&uot; Morris said.
