JACKSON &045; Patrick Vogt didn’t walk away with a first-place medal in the pole vault, but he did accomplish two things.

He finished second and beat a competitor from St. Aloysius.

Vogt was Cathedral’s highest finish at the Class 1A state meet Saturday at Hughes Field in Jackson as he cleared 11-6 and finish tied with Puckett’s Chris Harris, who also cleared 11-6.

Harris won on having the least amount of misses, but he knocked off St. Al’s Austin Golding, who cleared 12-0 last week at the South State meet.

&uot;That’s one of his better jumps,&uot;&160;Cathedral track coach Randy Brumfield said.&160;&uot;He did really well. That St. Al guy has been beating him all the time, and he beat him. He finished second to the St. Al guy (last week), so that’s pretty good.&uot;

The height was a new one for Vogt, who cleared 10-6 last week at South State.

&uot;The main thing was he had a chance to win it and missed it on his last chance,&uot; CHS coach Roy Garcia said. &uot;But he’s excited. We’ve been telling him he’s got to work out with weights, and he finally figured that’s what he’s going to do for next year. He can come back and win it next year.&uot;

The Green Wave and Lady Wave finished in 11th and 12th, respectively, in the team standings while not finishing higher than fifth in any of the other events.

Claire Kenda was fifth in the 3,200 Friday in 15:10.21, and Curtis Maier was sixth in 12:22.11.

The Lady Wave relay teams were missing Laura Huffines, who injured an ankle sliding into second base during a softball game earlier in the week.

&uot;We’ve got a real young team, and we’re just elated to get this far,&uot; Brumfield said. &uot;They’re going to get bigger and stronger, and that’s going to be wonderful. We’re pleased with what’s happening.&uot;

Other results were the 800 relay team of Kate Ellard, Haley Whittington, Christina Brumfield and Megan Whittington was seventh in 2:04.41, and the same four ran the 400 relay in 58.28 seconds to finish seventh.

Ja’Mel Jackson was sixth in the discus at 98-2, Lucas Naff was seventh in the discus at 92-0, Haley Whittington was seventh in the long jump at 13-8 1/2, Jessie Merritt was seventh in the 1,600 in 7:09.03 and the mile relay team of Merritt, Haley Whittington, Brumfield and Megan Whittington was seventh in 4:50.21.

&uot;The 400 went from 58.5 to 57.3 &045;&160;that’s pretty good,&uot; Brumfield said.&160;

&uot;Jessie Merritt is an eighth-grader. We’ve got one 11th-grader, two seniors and the rest are eighth- and ninth-graders and two 10th-graders.&uot;
