Annual display draws fans of fireworks to riverbank

Scores of people lined the banks of the Mississippi River for the fireworks that came from a barge in the middle of the river.

While people sat in lawn chairs, sat in the back of trucks and stood along the shores, Fred Falkenheiner thought he had the best seat in the house &045; with his grandchildren.

Falkenheiner rode his lawnmower down the sidewalk in front of his Vidalia home on Concordia Avenue with Grant and Madalyn Falkenheiner, 4-year-old twins of Natchez, in tow.

Falkenheiner, who must use a walker and wheelchair to get around, said he has ridden his grandchildren down to see the fireworks every year they have been alive.

And they do not forget when the fireworks come, &uot;when it gets dark,&uot; Grant said.

And he has been waiting for those fireworks all day, according to his dad, Lee Falkenheiner.

Fred Falkenheiner said Grant reminded everyone when it was time to go because he did not want to miss it.

Earlier in the day, the Falkenheiner’s shot fireworks of their own. Smoke bombs and bottle rockets were some of the fireworks of choice, in colors of yellow, blue, pink and purple.

Grant said his fireworks were better than the ones on the river but those were pretty good too.

A &uot;pufferfish&uot; is how he described what one of the fireworks looked like. And pink was Madalyn’s favorite color.

But across the river, two other 4-year-old twins had a different view &045; from the laps of their mother and grandmother.

&uot;Ooooh! Look at the red one,&uot; Jacie LeBlanc of Erath, La., said to her mom, Kim, brother Jesse and grandmother Sandra Boudreaux, as they watched the fireworks in Natchez.

Next to them, Stephanie Newell from Georgia oohed and aahed with her grandmother, Lois Scott of Natchez.

Newell said this was her first year to come but if she could, she would come back next year.

And down from them was Dennis Hooker. Even though he know lives in Dallas, he comes to Natchez every Fourth of July and has seen the river fireworks all of the 10 years they have been provided by the Isle of Capri Casino.

He brought his whole family with him and just arrived in time from a cookout.

He described the fireworks as lovely and amazing and said, &uot;They get better and better.&uot;

As the pops and pows and the claps, ooohs and aaahs ended, the masses left in their cars, on foot or in their lawnmowers and headed home.
