NATCHEZ &045; About 30 people gathered Saturday morning in the Pinemount-Sedgefield community to commemorate the opening of the Pinefield Recreational Park.

But the colorful new swing sets and asphalt basketball courts for the children are just a beginning for the 3.5-acre, county-operated facility on Pinemount Road, according to organizers.

&uot;Eventually, we would like to add some restroom facilities and some type of pavilion to provide shade for parents to sit and watch their children, or for parties,&uot; said Danielle Gaylor, a member of the St. Paul Community Outreach Program.

&uot;It all started with our Sunday School program at St. Paul AME Church. We wanted to give the kids something to do during the summer. Hopefully, this will be a start to getting more people involved in the community,&uot; Gaylor said.

The St. Paul group enlisted the help of Fifth District Supervisor Lynwood Easterling and Freddie Sandel, who represents the district on the Adams County Recreation Committee.

&uot;The people in the community decided they wanted to do something. It’s a community investment ŠWe had a lot people get involved, and this is the result,&uot; Sandel said.

Charles Wright, director of the St. Paul program, said the park is an example of what can happen when people work together.

&uot;Here, we have the church, the government and the community.

When you come together like that for a common cause, it’s always good,&uot; Wright said.

Easterling said the county will be responsible for security and maintenance at the park.

&uot;Our goal is to provide a recreational park in every district and area of the county,&uot; he said.

Four computers will also be provided to the St. Paul Community Center as part of the project to provide educational resources for children and adults.
