VIDALIA &045; Gary Morgan of Vidalia was so upset about raw sewage that is drained into rural ditches in the parish, he brought a pitcher full of it to the police jury Monday night to show his disgust.
&uot;Does anybody want to wash their hands in it?&uot; Morgan asked. &uot;Do you want your grandkids playing in this?&uot;
Morgan said he is tired of having to smell the sewage and wants the police jury to pass an ordinance against raw sewage in the ditches.
&uot;It is very appalling that people have to put up with this,&uot; Morgan said.
Police juror Cathey Darden told Morgan went she came into office 10 years ago, the jury, along with Rep. Bryant Hammett, began to get funding for a parishwide sewage system. She said the board is aware of the problem and under the plan, the whole parish will be in the system.
&uot;We all understand there is a sewer problem,&uot; Juror Melvin Ferrington said. &uot;But it takes money.&uot;
That money is 10 years in the works to fund the system but will be implemented in phases, according to Jury President Rodney Smith.
&uot;Eventually it’s supposed to move all throughout the parish,&uot; Smith said. &uot;It’s just going to take a while.&uot;
Concordia Parish sheriff’s candidate Jim Whittington brought to the attention of the board that campaign signs were placed on parish property in Ferriday.
Whittington said there were signs posted at the Doty Road substation in Ferriday.
The board said since that was a polling place, it was not legal for the signs to be posted there and they would look into the matter.
In other business, the board:
4Honored Tim Houghton, a paramedic for American Medical Response as a Star of Life recipient for his work in the community.
4Approved Bryant Hammett and Associates to obtain the right of way for Willingham Bayou.
4Met in executive session and voted to release the leases for Black Lake property.
4Tabled action on appointing a planning commission member and director to the Lake St. John Waterworks until the next meeting.
