NATCHEZ &045; Reynolds Atkins Sr. took a little more than 62 percent of the vote in Tuesday night’s Democratic primary to win his third term as tax assessor.

Atkins beat Charles Harrigill Jr. for the job of tax assessor.

Atkins said he will be a &uot;fair and equal&uot; tax assessor.

&uot;I invite anyone to come in and discuss their concerns on tax assessments,&uot; Atkins said.

Surrounded by many family members at the Ramada Inn, who he said supported and helped him along the way, Atkins said he was &uot;happy to be re-elected,&uot; celebrating the victory.

Harrigill could not be reached for comment.

Coroner

James Lee said Tuesday night he believes his Tuesday win over Rosie Sullivan to capture the Democratic nomination for coroner is due to his record.

&uot;There have been no broken promises, and I believe we’ve improved the office of coroner,&uot; said Lee who, in his race for a second term, will face independent John Pullen Nov. 4 in the general election. &uot;I said I would improve it, and I did.

&uot;I think the people of Adams County know who they want as coroner,&uot; he said.

Lee thanked his wife, deputy coroners and poll workers for their support. The pastor also thanked his church members, who celebrated at the Renaissance Room Tuesday night.

&uot;We just had a meal and listened to the returns. We’re not much for the bar scene,&uot; Lee said with a laugh.

On a more serious note Lee said that, if he is elected to a second term, he plans to further update the coroner’s office and to visit schools to talk about the perils of drinking and driving.

Lee won 64.98 percent of the vote to Rosie Sullivan’s 34.87 percent.
