Campbell re-elected; Districts 2, 5 in runoffs

NATCHEZ &045; Supervisor candidates in districts 2 and 5 will head to runoffs in three weeks, while Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell will keep his District 3 seat.

District 2 Republican candidate Brad Fondren won the nomination in his race.

In District 1, Jerry Lyles won the Democratic nomination to face incumbent Sammy Cauthen, who was unopposed in the Republican primary.

In District 2, Democratic incumbent Virginia Salmon will face Henry Watts in the Aug. 26 runoff.

The economy has been a key issue in supervisors’ races so far, with incumbents and challengers talking about the need to attract jobs to the area since International Paper closed its mill last month.

Lyles could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. He won 53.26 percent of the vote for Mike Lazarus’ 46.47 percent.

Fondren said he was pleased everyone ran a &uot;clean campaign,&uot; and he thanked his supporters for their voters. He also wished Salmon and Watts well in the runoff.

Fondren garnered 56.4 percent of the vote to Tim Morrison’s 42.93 percent.

Fondren also thanked Morrison for running a good campaign.

Salmon, who had 30.23 percent of the vote, said she was headed into that race &uot;full steam ahead.&uot;

Watts, who won 31.21 percent of the vote, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Henry Farmer had 20.87 percent of the vote in that race, while David Atkins had 17.11 percent.

In District 2, Democratic incumbent Lynwood Easterling said he enjoyed the campaign.

&uot;I’m looking forward to the next three weeks,&uot; he said, noting that he would continue to push the need for jobs. &uot;We’ve got some good things right around the corner. I’m going to get out and meet people and stand on my platform and my record.&uot;

Challenger S.E. &uot;Spanky&uot; Felter said he feels confident about the runoff because he and Jeff Webb, who came in third in the race, share several family members.

&uot;I feel good about it,&uot; Felter said, noting that he thinks jobs and garbage pickup are key issues. &uot;I’m going to put in the good Lord’s hands.&uot;

Easterling had 37.46 percent of the vote, Felter had 43.22 percent and Webb had 19.19 percent.

District 3 Democratic incumbent Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell said his opponents, Bobby &uot;Buddy&uot; Maples and Raythell Prince Smith, ran a tough race.

&uot;My opponents got out and fought hard without any mudslinging,&uot; he said. &uot;I give credit to God, and I’d like to thank all the people who voted for me.&uot;

Campbell said he will continue to try to grow the county and &uot;do the best we can for all people.&uot;

Campbell won 58.63 percent of the vote, while Maples had 20.07 percent and Smith had 20.93 percent.

District 4 supervisor Darryl Grennell ran unopposed.
