NATCHEZ &045; The local chapter of the NAACP is not endorsing any candidates, despite a campaign flier circulating in some neighborhoods that suggests otherwise.

The NAACP’s Michael Winn said Monday that the chapter wants to &uot;set the record straight&uot; after some residents received information that said the chapter is endorsing sheriff’s candidate Danny Barber.

Barber is in the Democratic runoff Aug. 26 against Ronnie Brown.

The winner will face incumbent Tommy Ferrell, a Republican, in November.

&uot;The NAACP has not endorsed anyone and will not endorse anyone,&uot; Winn said Monday.

&uot;We felt like (the flier) is unfair to us as an organization and unfair to the candidates who have worked so hard.&uot;

A letter disavowing any endorsement, signed by local president Alfred Hunter and state president Eugene Bryant Sr., states that the NAACP is instead involved in efforts toward voter registration and voter education.

&uot;We are involved in the get out to vote effort to ensure that our people take advantage of hard-fought efforts to register people to vote,&uot; the letter states.

Winn said he did not want to speculate about the origin of the political flier, which was apparently circulated in neighborhoods in south Natchez.

The Democratic primary for sheriff has been a high-profile &045; and expensive &045; race so far, with Brown by far out-raising other Democrats. He had raised nearly $28,000 before the primary, according to campaign finance reports.

Ferrell, meanwhile, had raised about $24,000 by early July, spending little because he had no opposition in the primary.
