NATCHEZ &045; The first Phillip &uot;Bucket&uot; West/Tommy O’Beirne/Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell Boys & Girls Charity Golf Scramble at Beau Pr Country Club couldn’t have turned out any better &045; beautiful weather and good golf for a great cause.

Tom Matthews, Richard Edgin and David Cothern teamed up to shoot a solid round of 16-under-par 56 on Friday to win the tournament by two shots.

&uot;We had 16 one-putts. That helps,&uot; Cothern said. &uot;All 16 birdies were one-putts. Richard and Tom hit the ball a long way. The only way I could help was by chipping and putting. We all putted good.

&uot;When one person missed, someone else stepped up. Tom really hit his irons good. The two holes we parred, on No. 1 we lipped out twice and on No. 4 we weren’t real close.&uot;

But more importantly, all the proceeds from the three-man scramble, which comprised of 81 players, will go to the Boys & Girls Cub of the Miss-Lou, Inc.

&uot;We have three or four fund-raisers a year. This is our first fund-raiser of the year,&uot;

said Faye Minor, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club. &uot;We depend on fund-raiser from the community. We expect to raise between $25,000 and $28,000 from this tournament.

&uot;We had three guys (West, O’Beirne and Campbell) who were instrumental in putting this together. They did all the groundwork for putting all this together &045; the prizes, the sponsors and the donations.&uot;

And the turnout for this tournament couldn’t have been better.

&uot;We had a fantastic turnout,&uot; Minor said. &uot;We had more people show up than we thought would show up. Everybody’s going to get something before they leave her.&uot;

All the members of the top six teams each won $200 golf bags, and over $6,000 in prizes were up for grabs.

Jeff Trecost, Johnny Christian and Phil Hale shot a 14-under 58 to finish in second place. They finished with 14 birdies and four pars.

&uot;Everything kind of came together,&uot; Christian said. &uot;Jeff drove the ball good. That’s what got us over the hump.&uot;

Jordan Farmer, Gary Farmer and Bill Byrne took third place in a scorecard playoff over Robin Punches, Kevin Smith and Woody Allen after both teams fired rounds of 12-under 60.

&uot;We parred the first two holes,&uot; Jordan Farmer said. &uot;We got it going on No. 4 and birdied all the way to 14. We didn’t make another birdie putt on 18. We played as a team.&uot;

&uot;We actually hit the ball well,&uot; Allen said. &uot;Our birdies were pretty much spread out. No one player really stood out. The golf course is in great shape. It’s a good tournament.&uot;

Tommy Geoghegan, Stephen Hollingsworth and Richard Young took fifth place on a scorecard playoff over Michael Callahan, Percy McKay and Bobby Brown thanks to a birdie on No. 10, the first hole of the scorecard playoff, after both teams finished with rounds of 11-under 61.
