BROOKHAVEN &045; Two losses in as many games in Division 7-1A has gotten the Cathedral Lady Green Wave hungry.

The second one came Monday when two leads were squandered, including a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh at West Lincoln. The Lady Bears rallied for three runs in their last at-bat to keep Cathedral from posting that first win.

And don’t tell them it’s still early. Well, it is, but complacency never got anyone anywhere.

&uot;Hopefully we’ll get our first district win Thursday,&uot; said CHS head coach Cloyce Hinton, whose team hosts Enterprise. &uot;But you couldn’t have asked for a better ball game (Monday). They played their hearts out. We’ve got eight more ball games in (division) left to play, and we could very easily be 2-0. We’ve got to get that bear off our backs.&uot;

The Lady Wave squandered a 6-2 lead in the fifth when the Lady Bears scored six runs to take the 8-6 lead thanks to a couple errors. But give the Lady Wave credit for hammering back with three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead again.

But West Lincoln had the top of its lineup up for the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters ended up on second and third before the Lady Wave posted an out, and the next batter doubled to score both runs and tie the game up. The next batter put one to the fence to score the winning run.

&uot;Our bats went cold there for a while, and they came back,&uot; Hinton said. &uot;We made a couple of errors, and they hit the ball pretty well. We played a good ball game, but we made a couple of errors that cost us.&uot;

Natchez 18, Franklin County 8

MEADVILLE &045; The whole lineup is tough enough. But when left-hander Tracey Davis gets hot, opposing teams better make adjustments.

Davis’ 5-for-5 game highlighted the Lady Bulldogs’ offense as they took a quick 10-0 lead and rode out the solid win over Franklin County. Davis had two triples and a double with one triple coming with the bases loaded as part of a four-run first. She tripled in the second as Natchez scored five.

Franklin Academy 4-2, Huntington 3-1

WINNSBORO, La. &045; Up against tough left-hander Heidi Lee, the Lady Hounds had a chance to beat her for the first time all season before Franklin rallied for two runs in its last at-bat to win the first game.

Of the Lady Hounds’ eight losses, six have come to Franklin Academy.

&uot;All she does is throw fastballs and high fastballs,&uot; Huntington coach Brandon Gousset said. &uot;She throws harder than Erin (Hedrick), but she only has that one pitch. At first she distracted our batters because she grunts real loud like Monica Seles. It was intimidating at first, but they’ve gotten used to it. If you’re anywhere near the field, you’ll hear it.&uot;

The Lady Hounds took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Amber Smith’s groundout to first scored Jessie Lee for the first out, and Hedrick tried to score from third on a passed ball but was gunned down for the second out. Lee got a strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom half the Lady Cougars put runners on second and third when assistant Rut Horne called for a pitchout. The pitch was not far enough away from the plate, and the girl slapped it into short left field.

Smith made a nice catch on it but collided with Jessie Lee on the play, and the runner tagged from third to tie it up. The next batter reached base on an infield grounder, and the Lady Hounds made an error to allow the winning run to score.
