County should look closely at contract

When Adams County supervisors voted earlier this year for a new garbage contract that cut pickups from two days per week to one, we thought it was a sound financial idea.
That’s because the new contract saved the county money and saved taxpayers money &045; and in tight financial times, every little bit helps.
But on Monday, supervisors voted to try to renegotiate the garbage contract with Preferred Transport to bring back twice-a-week pickups.
Supervisors said the uproar from county residents caused them to reconsider &045; and admitting you’re wrong about something is a valid reason to change.
We have to admit, though, the timing does seem suspicious.
That once-a-week garbage pickup has become a campaign issue in some supervisors’ races, and with a runoff and general election ahead, you have to wonder what really motivated them.
Supervisors voted unanimously to renegotiate, but we’d like to see some careful consideration before they accept a new contract.
Inevitably, it seems both county residents and the county government itself will have to pay something extra. We’d like supervisors to make sure county residents want to take on that extra cost.
Still, with residents complaining their garbage is piling up, twice-a-week pickups could make a difference in how our community looks &045; a topic that has been on the minds of many residents (and certainly in the headlines of this newspaper) lately.
Supervisors are listening to their constituents’ wishes &045; we just hope they aren’t catering to their own campaign wishes.
