FOREST &045; The last time Cathedral and Scott Central faced each other in a playoff game was 1993 when the Green Wave rolled to a 39-8 win to advance to the South State championship game.

This time there would be no such luck as the Rebels took over a close game with a huge 21-point third quarter en route to a 56-24 win Friday night in the first round of the Class 1A South State playoffs.

Scott Central, now 11-1 and the Region 3-1A champion, will host Bogue Chitto in the second round this Friday night. Cathedral, the No. 4 seed from Region 4-1A, finished its season at 7-4.

&uot;I thought our kids played hard tonight. They played with a lot of heart,&uot; Green Wave head coach Ken Beesley Sr. said.

This playoff game had a lot of offense as both team combined for 1,035 yards &045; 557 from Scott Central, 458 from Cathedral.

But, as has been the case during the regular season, Cathedral took on a team that was bigger and stronger, and that played a key factor in the game.

Cathedral was unable to stop the Rebels’ running game, which racked up 525 yards on 41 carries and seven touchdowns, including two 100-yard-plus rushers.

&uot;They have a big line, but they have big backs too,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;They were up against a bigger and more physical team.&uot;

John Paul Kenda gave Cathedral a 6-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown run with 6:22 to go in the first quarter.

But just over a minute later Scott Central took a 7-6 lead on a 90-yard touchdown run by Tony Lyles and Ivan Garcia’s extra point.

The Rebels then took a 14-6 lead on a nine-yard touchdown run by Paul Bradford with 10:01 left in the second quarter.

The Green Wave cut the lead to 14-12 on a seven-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Jackson, who had 173 yards on 17 carries, but the two-point conversion pass was no good.
