McGlothin, Allen will face off in election for mayor

VIDALIA, La. &045; The race for mayor of Ferriday was whittled down from six candidates to two Tuesday night as Gene Allen and Glen McGlothin will face off in the general election April 17.

The Ferriday mayors’ race is just one of four runoffs in Concordia Parish elections. The other runoffs are in three school board races &045; District 1, Place A, District 3, Place B and District 4, Place B.

The Ferriday mayors’ race brought about 62 percent of Ferriday voters to the polls Tuesday to chose between six candidates.

McGlothin said he was pleased with the results and with coming out on top with 644 of the 1,504 votes Tuesday night and almost 43 percent.

&uot;I was looking for a runoff just by sheer numbers,&uot; McGlothin said.

McGlothin said he was prepared for it and pleased with it, especially since he received the most votes.

&uot;I think I’m going to win,&uot; McGlothin said.

McGlothin said his campaign strategy for the next month is simply to &uot;work hard.&uot;

&uot;I’m going to work as hard as anyone can to win this election,&uot; McGlothin said.

Gene Allen refused to comment Tuesday night.

But Allen said last week he was running to bring new leadership to Ferriday.

&uot;I think Ferriday needs new leadership,&uot; Allen said.

&uot;We need to get Ferriday moving again.&uot;

Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry took only about 64 percent of Concordia Parish Democratic votes and Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush garnered almost 98 percent of Republican votes.

Incumbents Billy Hammers in Vidalia and Clarence W. &uot;PaPa&uot; Skipper in Clayton claimed their chiefs of police races outright as did school board candidates Gary Parnham in District 3, Place A and incumbent Ernest Lynn White in District 5, Place B.
