Amite clips Rams in big 7-A bout; Wave wins

LIBERTY &045; For the first time in several years, the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams were playing an important game late in the season with first place in the district at stake.

But for the Rams to move into a tie for first place in MPSA District 7-A with Amite School Center, they could not afford to do what they did on March 12 in Woodville &045; commit five errors in one inning that allowed the Rebels to escape with a 9-6 win.

But again WCCA made some costly mistakes and could not take advantage of having runners in scoring position as the Rebels survived for a 4-2 win Tuesday night to stay atop the district standings by themselves.

&uot;It was a top quality game. Both teams played hard,&uot; Rams head coach Ray Olive said.

Amite pitcher Dustin Iverson went the distance and held WCCA (7-6, 4-2) to just two hits while striking out seven and walking two.

And despite the loss, Brad Pritchard had a good performance on the mound as well, allowing just four hits while striking out five and also walking just two batters.

&uot;Both pitchers pitched real well,&uot; Olive said. &uot;Liberty hits the ball. The turning point was that their errors didn’t hurt them. Ours were costly.&uot;

WCCA took a 1-0 lead when leadoff hitter Ruston Cado doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Stephen Goulette.

Amite (6-0 in district play) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Dean Lewis doubled and scored on an error and Adam Jackson walked and scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Rebels added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Austin Bean scored on a fielder’s choice double play turned by the Rams for a 3-1 lead.

Cathedral 17, Enterprise 2

NATCHEZ &045; Just like the doubleheader at Pelahatchie last Friday, the Green Wave didn’t take long to put away another Division 7-1A opponent Tuesday night as this game was stopped after three innings.

Cathedral (13-2, 6-0) erased an early 2-0 deficit by scoring eight runs in the first inning.

The Green Wave added seven runs in the second and two in the bottom of the third.

Cathedral had its way with Yellow Jacket pitcher Chad Everett by having 12 hits, including triples by Garrett Jones and Drew Burns.

&uot;We’re hitting the ball pretty well,&uot; Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;Hopefully we can keep it up. We’ve got a big game coming up Friday against West Lincoln.&uot;

Te Riley improved his record to 5-2 by limiting Enterprise (3-3 in division play) to just four hits, two of them by Bill McKee, while striking out eight batters.

Franklin 17, Wilkinson 0

WOODVILLE &045; Even though this Division 7-3A game lasted all of three innings, Franklin County’s Baron Jones pitched a no-hitter and struck out six and the Bulldogs put on an offensive clinic to start the game.

Franklin County (9-4, 6-1) scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning and Wilkinson County (1-6, 1-5) never recovered from that. The Bulldogs added five runs in the second.

Ryan Hall hit a home run and Chase Evans had a triple for Franklin, who finished with 14 hits.
