NATCHEZ &045;&045; Not all of the soldiers who have come back to the Miss-Lou from Iraq are getting to stay at home.
Pfc. Patrick Krueger, who is a U.S. Marine, came home to Natchez in August after spending eight months in the Middle East, on the road between Kuwait and Baghdad. But on March 1, Krueger was redeployed, but this time he is serving in the infantry in Fallujah, Iraq, a place that just Wednesday was the sight of intense fighting and casualties.
&uot;I just hope people do realize there are a lot of dangers over there and pray for them,&uot; said Krueger’s wife, Jessica.
That is what makes his second deployment harder than the first, according to Jessica, his mother Sue and his grandmother, Carolyn Krueger. &uot;It is very, very frightening for me,&uot; Sue said.
Patrick is set to serve seven months, Jessica said, but it could be as much as 13. They found out in January that he would be redeployed to Iraq.
Carolyn said she knows Fallujah is where much of the fighting is taking place it is &uot;really scary because he is right there.&uot;
Patrick calls home about every other day and talks to his wife, mother and grandmother. And Jessica just feeds off the calls.
It is &uot;one of the best days of your life … (getting) that reassuring phone call that they are OK,&uot; she said.
Carolyn said Patrick called one early morning around 2 a.m., waking her up. All at once, he let her go with little explanation, calling back about 20 minutes later to explain there had been mortar fire.
&uot;I couldn’t sleep much rest of the night,&uot; she said.
All three said they are worried because more U.S. soldiers are being killed now, after the war officially ended, than before.
&uot;It’s just terrifying because you don’t know what is going to happen next,&uot; Jessica said.
Their biggest scare so far, when Patrick did not call Saturday when he was supposed to have, eventually calling Tuesday.
&uot;That’s been the worst,&uot; Sue said, because she at least, is sitting &uot;on needles and pins, waiting for him to call.&uot;
Jessica, who moved back to Natchez to be with her family and close friends while Patrick is away, said she is in constant contact with his family, mother Sue in Baton Rouge and grandparents Rudy and Carolyn in Natchez. But for Jessica and Sue at least, they also are constantly in front of a television.
&uot;I make myself leave the TV,&uot; Sue said. &uot;I just won’t sit there and watch … watching every single minute that they are doing reports on Iraq. I just won’t do that to myself.&uot; But, she said, since the recent mission started Sunday in Fallujah, &uot;I am waking up in the middle of the night watching Fox News and CNN.&uot;
Vidalian Lt. Col. Jeff McClure, who returned home from Kuwait in August after an eight-month tour, left again in November for Kuwait, another Miss-Lou soldier that was redeployed after serving since the war began in February 2003.
