NATCHEZ &045; It only took one hole early Sunday afternoon for the entire complexion &045; and the outcome &045; of the championship flight of the 29th annual Harvest Club Invitational Golf Tournament to change.
Defending tournament champion Thurman Glass of Memphis, Tenn. went into the par-5 10th hole at the Duncan Park Golf Course trailing first-round leader Terry Pierce of Baton Rouge by three shots and was possibly looking at a second- or even third-place finish.
That all changed as Glass birdied No. 10 en route to a final-round 1-over-par 72 for a two-day total of 148 to defend his championship while Pierce ended up with a triple-bogey 8 on the very same hole and finished with a 5-over 76 to finish second at 149.
And Glass won despite nearly blowing a three-shot lead going into his and Pierce’s last two holes of the day.
&uot;I shot 2-over on the front nine. I birdied 8 and 9,&uot; Glass said. &uot;The back side I birdied 10 and eagled the par-5 14th. Then I bogeyed 17 and 18. I didn’t putt well. I hit the ball well. I had some short birdie putts that I missed.&uot;
And Pierce himself could have had a bigger lead at the end of Saturday’s opening round. He birdied Nos. 1 and 3, but four bogeys, including three on the back nine, for a 1-over 73.
And his play in Sunday’s final round wasn’t much better.
&uot;I just didn’t play solid golf. No excuses,&uot; Pierce said. &uot;I didn’t putt very well. I had 35 putts on the day. But I enjoyed the tournament and I look forward to coming back next year.&uot;
Leroy Smith of McComb finished third in the championship flight after firing a final-round, 3-over 74 for a two-day total of 150.
Smith had the most unique first round of those that ended up in the championship flight &045; five birdies (Nos. 1, 3, 4, 14 and 17), four bogeys (Nos. 5, 15, 16 and 18) and three double bogeys (Nos. 2, 10 and 11).
Smith said his play in the final round was just as crazy.
&uot;I had one of them up-and-down rounds,&uot; Smith said. &uot;I had five birdies today. I hit it in the lake on No. 1. That’s a bad start. I hit the ball better. I just didn’t socre no better.&uot;
Once again, several cities were well represented in this tournament, including Natchez, Jackson, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Pensacola and Chicago.
Sixty-nine golfers participated in this year’s tournament, which, tournament director K.G. Watkins noted, was about the same as last year.
&uot;We were hoping for more, but it’s about the same,&uot; Watkins said. &uot;That’s been the norm for the last couple of years. But we’ve been here for 29 years.&uot;
