NATCHEZ &045; It’s already a given that you never really know what’s going to happen in the pitching machine league.
But maybe the Natchez Nationals give that phrase a whole new meaning.
What was close to becoming a split on Thursday to force everyone to come back today for Game 3 turned into some serious drama. The Nationals got down to their last out before rallying for five runs to take an 11-10 win in Game 2 for the sweep over the Americans in the City All-Star championship after winning Game 1 18-4.
And for the record, there will be no game today. The next time these two teams will go again will be the sub-district tournament next week at Brookhaven.
The Americans used an eight-run third inning to take a 10-2 lead after every break seemed to go their way. But the Nationals cut it to 10-6 through five and went into their last at-bat hoping just to get the top of the order up at the plate.
Hunter Lindsey was reached first with two outs before leadoff hitter Trey Fleming reached the plate and reached on a single. Turner Lessley followed with a single to score Lindsey, and slugger Brandon Ross tripled to score Fleming and Lessley and cut the lead to 10-9.
Thomas Garrity singled in Ross to tie the game up and went to second on the throw. Quinton Logan singled Garrity to third, and Caleb Cross singled Garrity home to give the Nationals the win.
After getting down by eight runs, the Nationals chipped away while the Americans played well enough to close the deal. Logan had a big shot in the fourth inning when he tripled with the bases loaded to score Lessley, Ross and Landon Seyfarth before getting thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
In the fifth Cross led off with a single, moved up on a Cameron Farmer single and scored on a Chris Angles infield groundout to cut the lead to 10-6.
But give credit to the Americans for hacking away in the second inning to put up eight runs after suffering the big defeat in Game 1. Josh Brown had a two-run triple to score Justin Allgood and Michael Iles, and Skeeter Myles drove in Brown with a single.
Tyler Buckles later singled in two runs and scored on a William Ladner single for a 10-2 Americans lead.
The Americans scored two in the first to take a quick lead, but the Nationals got two in the second on a Cross home run with Garrity on base.
In Game 1, the Nationals put up five runs in their first at-bat and tacked on four in the third to pull away. In the third Logan had a two-run triple to score Ross and Garrity, and Cross followed that up with a home run for a 9-1 lead.
The Nationals picked up two more in the fourth in RBI singles from Lessley and Ross, but the Americans answered with three in the bottom half with RBI singles from Phillip Tyra, Iles and Joshua Brown.
The Nationals broke it open in the fifth with six runs, including a single from Fleming that scored Jordan Arnold and Luke Thomas.
