A trip to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art is like a lesson in line, color and pattern.

The Ocean Springs’ museum displays hundreds of watercolors, pencil, crayon and ink drawings, sculptures in wood, linoleum, block prints, oil paintings and furniture by Anderson.

In addition to the smaller art pieces, visitors can view several wall murals and enter Anderson’s private room covered with his private wall murals.

Anderson, born in Louisiana, spent most of his life in Ocean Springs at Shearwater Pottery, founded by his brother. Much of his art includes drawings and sculptures of the flora and fauna of the surrounding area and nearby Horn Island.

The Shearwater compound is open to visitors and is about two miles from the museum, public relations director Meredith Barnes said.

Barnes said the museum sees a mixed crowd of visitors and is good for children.

&uot;His art is great for kids,&uot; Barnes said. &uot;It is really approachable and has simple lines. It is not intimidating artwork.&uot;

The museum’s size is also a plus for children, Barnes said. A full trip through takes about half an hour to an hour, she said.

The museum also includes rotating exhibits of the work of local artists whose art crosses paths with Anderson’s.

The next special exhibit will be Visual Harmony: Melody, Words, and Birds in Anderson’s Art from July 15 to Nov. 8, but the main gallery always exhibits his work.

Admission is $6 and the museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

&uot;If you are going to come to Ocean Springs you should definitely visit the museum,&uot; Barnes said. &uot;There is also historic Ocean Springs with wonderful restaurants and great shops. You could spend an entire relaxing afternoon walking the streets.&uot;
