NATCHEZ &045;&045; Marion Crawls knows what good neighbors are.
Sleeping in her Beaumont Street house, Crawls didn’t know flames were slowly filling up the front room of her house until she heard her neighbor LaToya Noble crash through the window of her house.
Noble was grilling on her front porch when she noticed flames bursting from the northwest windows of Crawls’ house.
Noble quickly ran up the front steps to help rescue Crawls, who was taking a nap in the house.
&uot;I was knocking and ringing at her front door,&uot; Noble said. &uot;She couldn’t hear.&uot;
Still trying to get Crawls’ attention, Nobles then decided to go through one of the porch windows. Using her fists, Nobles punched into the window breaking the glass.
&uot;I was just reacting,&uot; Noble said as she tended to her left hand.
Finally catching Crawls’ attention, Noble then told her neighbor to get out of the house as soon as possible.
Soon after, Natchez firefighters arrived to find the front porch engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly responded and contained the fire to the front of the house.
&uot;Our guys did an excellent job knocking the fire down,&uot; Natchez Fire Department Capt. Chris Gibson said. &uot;They prevented the fire from spreading any farther than it did.&uot;
According to Gibson, the house sustained heavy smoke damage throughout and heavy damage through 90 percent of the house.
The cause of the fire, which was contained to the front two rooms and the porch of the house, is under investigation, according to fire officials.
No one was injured in the fire.
