WINNSBORO &045; Bearing a black eye and swollen cheek, Huntington pitcher Erin Hedrick went to the mound with a little more fire on Monday.

In another shot at Franklin Academy for her young Lady Hounds squad, the senior was solid &045; even despite reporting a 101-degree fever that morning. Hedrick fanned eight and surrendered three hits as the Lady Hounds took a 4-3 win over the Lady Cougars in nine innings.

It was the second win in three days over a Franklin team that handed the Lady Hounds seven losses in as many chances last season.

&uot;She scattered the three hits out there, and believe me &045; they’re a good-hitting team,&uot; Huntington head coach Rut Horne said. &uot;The strikeouts were all scattered out, but they were at big times. They couldn’t hit the riseball, curveball and changeup. I bet they didn’t see but three fastballs all day. Erin is a gamer, and she hit well, too.&uot;

Hedrick got a key strikeout in the bottom of the ninth after Franklin started with the runner on second with the international tie-breaker rule. Heidi Lee went to second to start off, and Franklin moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt.

But Hedrick got the next batter on a strikeout for the second out and the next batter to ground out to Leslie Wagoner at third to end it.

After both teams scored in the eighth inning, the Lady Hounds scored again in the ninth after Krystal Arnold started at second on the tie-breaker. Brandy Butts moved her to third on a sacrifice, and Wagoner singled in Arnold for the 4-3 lead.

Franklin led 2-0 heading into the seventh until the Lady Hounds got two runs to tie it up. Hedrick singled, Arnold reached on an error and Butts singled in Hedrick for the first run.

Arnold was thrown out at third, but Wagoner singled in Butts to tie it up.

Franklin didn’t throw Lee on Monday after the hard-throwing lefty threw all day Saturday at the River Oaks tournament.

Silliman 3, Centreville 2

CLINTON, La. &045; These two teams went into extra innings again, but this time they needed just nine to declare a winner.

The Lady Wildcats broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom half of the ninth to claim the win after the same two teams battled to a 12-inning decision the last time out. Silliman got the deciding run when E. Stuckley started on second with the tie-breaker rule, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single from D. Gregoire.

The Lady Tigers trailed 2-1 after five before tying it up in the sixth when Kelly Simpson scored when Silliman misplayed a ball off the bat of Haley Bowser.

Silliman led 1-0 after four before Centreville tied it up when Ash Brashier put one over the fence for a home run.
