WOODVILLE &045; A balanced attack of passing and rushing led by David Dawson and Alvin Fossleman led the Wilkinson County Wildcats to an easy 38-0 win over the South Delta Bulldogs Friday night in their season opener.

Dawson was 8-of-11 for 164 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Fossleman led the Wildcats running game with 134 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown.

&uot;We did a pretty decent job,&uot; Wildcats head coach John Moore said. &uot;As the game went on we wore them down. We got off to a sluggish start and by the second quarter we picked it up.&uot;

After a scoreless first quarter, Wilkinson County took control with a 20-point second quarter as Fossleman scored on a 7-yard run, Jeremy Hamlin had a 5-yard touchdown run and Dawson capped it off with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Price with just over one minute to go until halftime.

Wilkinson County finished with 409 yards of total offense &045; 245 yards rushing and 164 yards passing.

&uot;We executed pretty good,&uot; Moore said. &uot;We mixed up the pass and the run.&uot;

LaKendrick Russ scored on a 9-yard run in the third quarter for a 27-0 Wildcat lead. Dawson’s second touchdown pass from 9 yards out as he connected with Corey Dunbar less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

Lavoris Montgomery finished the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run of his own with 2:59 remaining in the game.

Moore said there are still things the team needs work on, especially special teams.

&uot;We gave up a 75-yard kickoff return, but they didn’t score,&uot; Moore said.

Jefferson 45, Crystal Springs 14

CRYSTAL SPRINGS &045; Jimmie Shorter and Ernest Havard led the visiting Tigers’ rushing attack by combining to score five touchdowns in their easy win over the host Tigers Friday night.

Shorter scored three touchdowns on runs of 5 in the first quarter and 55 in the fourth quarter and another short run earlier in the fourth quarter.

Havard scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and a 63-yard run in the second quarter.

&uot;He’s a hard worker,&uot; Tigers head coach Jeffery Harness said. &uot;He has a good work ethic in practice and it showed in the game.&uot;

Anthony Chambliss’ 40-yard touchdown catch from Trevor Malone gave Jefferson County a commanding 25-0 halftime lead.

As for the performance of quarterback Trevor Malone, Harness said, &uot;He did fairly well. He’s got a lot of learning to do.&uot;

Harness was also pleased with how the defense played, except for two long touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

&uot;Overall, the defense played good,&uot; Harness said. &uot;We gave up some big plays in the second half, though. We didn’t turn it up in the second half.&uot;
