DEXTER &045; A 36-run, 34-hit day over the course of a doubleheader is good for anyone, but the Cathedral Lady Wave may have been all smiles.
The Lady Wave netted a couple of 18-3 poundings over Dexter on Monday but did in almost textbook fashion in the second game. The Lady Wave did a better job of place-hitting, kept it away from Dexter’s two best position players and posted a couple of region wins.
It puts the Lady Wave (7-7, 4-3) in a big region contest Thursday at home against Bogue Chitto.
&uot;Their shortstop was really good, and their rover (left centerfielder) was really good,&uot; CHS head coach Erin Binns said. &uot;We’ve been working on place-hitting. I told them every time they hit it to the shorstop or left centerfielder they had hills to run. I gave them an ultimatum, and they did what they had to do.
&uot;(Thursday) is a big game for us. When we went to Bogue Chitto, we played them a close game. We’re thinking when they come here on our home field we’ll have home-field advantage. We’re going to practice hard.&uot;
The Lady Wave exploded late in both games to put it away, but Game 2 was more convincing. The Lady Wave put up six runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead, tacked on another in the fourth when Emily Stevens doubled in Alex Roberts for an 8-3 lead before breaking it open in the fifth.
Cathedral scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to end it.
&uot;Their hitting has improved tremendously since our first few weeks,&uot; Binns said. &uot;I like to say we don’t have a bad part of the lineup, but on any given day our lineup is pretty solid all the way down. But that’s not every day.&uot;
In the first game the Lady Wave put together a seven-run third inning that included a Kristina Brumfield home run that scored Jennifer Bernard and Brandi McGraw. In the fourth Anna Huffines doubled in Caitlin Huffines for a 12-3 lead.
Cathedral then tacked on six runs in the seventh.
Centreville 11, Columbia 2
COLUMBIA &045; The Lady Tigers put the hits together early in a five-inning tuneup for the start of the South State tournament Wednesday at Ridgeland.
The Lady Tigers (17-10) scored three in the first thanks to three Columbia errors and five more in the second. Kelly Simpson and Courtney O’Dell singled in runs in the first, and Ash Brashier tripled in Courtney Travis and Amber Addington in the third.
Simpson also doubled in Kendall Madsen and Haley Bowser in the second. The Lady Tigers tacked on three in the fourth.
Madsen pitched all five innings for the Lady Tigers while allowing one run, walking none and striking out six.
