NATCHEZ &045; This Cathedral team can hit.
More importantly, the team can hit in the clutch.
You can’t get more clutch than scoring six runs in your final at-bat to get a win, and that’s what the Lady Wave did Tuesday. After trailing by five heading into its last at-bat, the Lady Wave scored six runs but putting together six hits to claim a 10-9 win over Bogue Chitto in its final regular season game.
The win keeps the Lady Wave in position to claim a spot in the playoffs as the No. 4 team out of Division 7-1A. The Lady Wave may end up playing at Mize Oct. 8 to start the playoffs.
&uot;I know we got on Franklin County pretty good (Tuesday), but this was a totally different team than last night,&uot; Cathedral head coach Erin Binns said. &uot;I’ve been telling them all year &045; you’ve got to have heart and dedication. They wanted it. It was Senior Night, their last go-around, and they fought back.&uot;
It was a disappointing outcome for the Lady Bobcats, who did enough damage both at the plate and in the field to win the game. Haley Roberts had two triples and a double to drive in four runs, but things just didn’t go their way in the final inning.
The Lady Bobcats had three errors in the seventh and had to bring in reliever Kelli Howard just after the Lady Wave tied it up. Head coach Scott Leggett was forced to pull starter Latoya Braxton when he made his second trip to the mound in the inning and bring in Howard.
Howard walked Jennifer Bernard and gave up a single to Megan Whittington to load the bases. Anna Huffines then walked to score Caitlin Huffines and end the game.
&uot;That’s the story of our year &045; consistency is not part of our game,&uot; Leggett said. &uot;I’m not taking anything away from Cathedral. They played well and deserve to be in the playoffs. I’m happy for them. We’re in the playoffs, but we’re still alive for second. We’ve got to beat Enterprise tomorrow.&uot;
The biggest hit in the rally came from junior Caitlin Huffines, who followed the team’s top slugger in Jordan Chandler with two runners on. Chandler, who tripled earlier, fouled off a pitch with two strikes for the second out of the inning in what could have been a downer for the Lady Wave.
Instead, Caitlin Huffines slapped one into short left center, and the ball got past the outfield to score Alex Roberts and Emily Stevens to tie the game.
&uot;I just turned around and said, ‘I can’t look,’&uot; Binns said. &uot;I told Jordan to please go opposite field. She said, ‘The last time I did that, I grounded out.’ She just couldn’t get around on one. It just wasn’t the right pitch.
&uot;But Caitlin came up with a huge hit. She came through big &045; real big. They all had timely hits in that last inning. They all pulled it together. That’s what I’ve been waiting for this whole year.&uot;
The Lady Bobcats broke open a 2-2 game in the fifth when Roberts came through with a triple with the bases loaded to score Dori Hall, Kayla Smith and Bryanna Wallace. Cathedral tacked on two in the bottom half, but Bogue Chitto picked up insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.
Roberts tripled in the seventh to score Wallace, and Howard grounded out to short to score Roberts for a 9-4 lead.
&uot;We hit the ball well at times,&uot; Leggett said. &uot;It seems like when we get a rally going, we’ll shut down. On defense we’ll play well, and at times we’ll make crucial errors. In this game, you can’t afford that. Consistency is the key.&uot;
