NATCHEZ &045; Friday night’s Region 4-1A matchup between the Enterprise Yellow Jackets from Brookhaven and the Cathedral Green Wave was supposed to have been a close, hard-fought game that could have gone either way.
And with this being Cathedral’s homecoming game, head coach Ken Beesley Sr. was concerned with how well his team would perform.
But after seeing his Green Wave put up 28 points in the first half, he didn’t end up with too much to worry about as they rolled to a 35-6 win at D’Evereux Stadium to get closer to a possible playoff spot at the end of the season.
&uot;I was pleased with the way we came out in the first half,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We were focused. This is the best first half we’ve played all season. Our offense took advantage of their mistakes.&uot;
Cathedral (2-4, 2-3) took control of the game when Enterprise fumbled and Andrew Ellard picked up the loose ball and ran it back 47 yards for a touchdown nearly midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Zack Calhoun scored on a 1-yard run with less than a minute to go in the opening quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Patrick McDonough, who has his best game throwing the ball this season, had a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter to give the Green Wave a commanding 28-0 halftime lead.
McDonough completed 10 of 13 passes with no interceptions for 122 yards.
&uot;Patrick threw the ball real well,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;Andrew and Zack and Daniel Hollowell ran the ball well. It was a balanced running attack.&uot;
Hollowell had a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for a 35-0 lead, but the chance at a shutout ended with 4:45 to go in the game when Enterprise’s Terrell May, who was their only offense with nearly 150 yards rushing, scored on a 4-yard run.
Justin Dollar led Cathedral’s defense with 11 total tackles, a pair of fumble recoveries and an interception.
