NATCHEZ &045; Lee Moore said his team was the least likely to win it all.

Sometimes, unlikely things happen.

Moore and his team finished the day with a win and garnered bragging rights in addition to their prizes at the fifth Celebrity Golf Outing benefiting the Natchez Children’s Home.

The team of Lee Moore, Jeff Loy, Pete Buttross, Robert Paradise, Bill McKenzie and Gary Farmer won the event with a 16-under-par 56 on the day. Each member of the team got a share of the $400 prize in addition to the sleeve of golf balls every participant received.

&uot;We had a good team and a good time,&uot; Moore said. &uot;I didn’t think we had a prayer.&uot;

Each of the five teams featured a celebrity from the sports world. Lee Moore, who works for the Celebrity Players Tour, Brian Kinchen, a former LSU and NFL tight end, Major League Baseball umpire Joe West, Charlie Rymer, ESPN golf broadcaster and former PGA Tour member, and Mike Young, who designed the golf course at Beau Pr.

Buttross, 85, led his team to victory with a fast start, getting three birdies for the team on the first three holes.

&uot;I did my share, that’s all,&uot; Buttross said. &uot;We had a great team and everybody did their part.&uot;

Gary Farmer said that Moore kept them laughing throughout the round with his jokes and funny stories.

Moore is Director of Public Relations for the Celebrity Players’ Tour. In the early 1990s, when he worked with the T.C. Jordan Tour, now the Hooters Tour, Moore worked at events with that tour at Beau Pr. When that tour stopped coming to Natchez, Moore talked to children’s home director Nancy Hungerford about bringing celebrity players here to raise money for the home.

Thus the Celebrity Golf Outing was born. This year’s event featured the five celebrities and 22 local players who donated money to the children’s home in order to play in the event.

&uot;We’re just so happy they can come out here and do this,&uot; Hungerford said. &uot;The children really get a kick out of it and we can certainly use the money we get from it.&uot;

The children’s happiness was evident Monday evening when the celebrities ate dinner with the staff and children at the home.

&uot;When you come (to the home) and visit with the children, you realize just how important this is,&uot; Moore said. &uot;The guys all love coming here. A lot of them have kids of their own, so they appreciate it.&uot;
