NATCHEZ &045; Fine dining and adult chitchat are on the menu for the Boys & Girls Club’s best-behaved members Thursday night.
The club will sponsor its annual Steak and Steak dinner for the community and the kids as a major fundraiser for the organization.
The club staff chooses students based mainly on behavior to invite to the dinner. The children will be seated three to a table, in between three adults from the community.
&uot;We want to give people in the community the opportunity to talk to the children and have an experience with the kids,&uot; Director of Operations Matilda Stephens said.
Last year’s fundraiser brought in between $13,000 and $14,000 for the club. An annual golf tournament also brings in a similar amount.
Former Attorney General Mike Moore will speak at the dinner Thursday.
&uot;I’m thrilled to death,&uot; Stephens said. &uot;If there was a person in the state that was the father of the Boys & Girls Club it’s him.&uot;
When Moore was the attorney general he funneled state funds into the organization across the state and also personally worked with the Natchez club to get it started.
&uot;He was extremely instrumental in starting this club,&uot; Stephens said. &uot;He held a lot of hands along the way to get it started. He had a passion for children’s programming.&uot;
Stephens said she though Moore would be shocked to come back three years after the local club’s inception and see that it has grown to two more Natchez-Adams branches and into two neighboring counties.
Stephens said she was also very excited about the Boys & Girls Club National Medallion that will be given to volunteer Margaret Weed at the dinner. A representative from the national club will be on hand to present the award.
&uot;It’s unheard of for a club three years old to have someone receive a national award,&uot; Stephens said.
The dinner will be at 7 p.m. at Jefferson Street United Methodist Church. Individual tickets can be bought at the door for $100 each.
Sponsorships are also available, interested parties can call the club at 304-5548 to buy tickets.
