Tensas girls beat AC in overtime

ST. JOSEPH, La. &045; When the 3-pointers are falling like rain, no one was really thinking about going inside.
But Tensas head coach Chuck Bauerle was persistent.
The Lady Chiefs put on a show from behind the 3-point line &045; some well behind the 3-point line &045; but finally got some key baskets down on the block late as they took a 51-50 win in overtime over Adams Christian Monday. The Lady Chiefs connected on eight 3-pointers, but ACCS shot the ball well enough on their end to counter.
But Tensas had a key shot just before the end of regulation and hit some high-percentage shots in the overtime to get the win.
&uot;I don’t think we did as good a job of getting the ball inside as we should have,&uot; Bauerle said. &uot;They were in the 1-3-1 and went to the 3-2, but we didn’t get it in there. Sometimes that (3-pointers) doesn’t matter the most, but it sure helped. One thing I can say for sure &045; one thing Adams Christian’s girls do is play hard. And I think our girls played hard, too.&uot;
The Lady Chiefs (6-4) had to fight to get the last bucket of regulation to send it into overtime, and from there things clicked on both sides of the court. Up against the Lady Rebels’ zone defense, the Lady Chiefs got three big buckets inside from Megan Bauerle and a huge 3-pointer from Aubrey McEachern.
McEachern’s triple came with 38 seconds left that broke a 48-48 tie, and the Lady Rebels got a bucket with 27 seconds left from Katie Ann Swinney to cut it to one. Tensas turned it over on its next possession with 12 seconds left, but the Lady Rebels couldn’t get a shot to fall on their possession.
&uot;It was a tight game the whole way,&uot; said Megan Bauerle, who finished with 14 points to lead Tensas along with Sarah Beth Melville’s 14. &uot;They played zone the whole game. We wanted to get it in the middle and get the ball inside. That was a disappointing loss (to Claiborne Saturday), and we’re just excited we came out with a win. It doesn’t really matter in the end if you win by one or 10 &045; it’s still a win.&uot;
Even with the loss, the Lady Rebels played about as well as they’ve played down the stretch in a while. They shot the ball much better for the second straight game, and this time they didn’t fizzle out a bit in the fourth quarter.
Even in overtime the Lady Chiefs got the first bucket, but AC scored the next two when Meghan Austin and Genna Yelverton put in buckets for a 46-44 lead. Tensas led 48-46, and Katie Ann Swinney knocked down a shot with 53 seconds left to tie it up for the ninth time.
&uot;We never quit, and that’s what I’m very proud of,&uot; Adams head coach John Gray said.
&uot;I’m proud of their effort, their hustling and taking those shots. We had a great team effort. They’ve got a good basketball team, and I think they’re one of the top three or four A schools in girls’ basketball. That (eight 3-pointers) is just unheard of in girls’ basketball.&uot;
Perhaps the biggest shot from around the bucket from the Lady Chiefs came right at the end of regulation. The Lady Rebels had a 42-40 lead and held Tensas to two misses with 19 seconds left before the ball went out of bounds two seconds later under the basket.
The Lady Chiefs then ran an in-bounds play right that ended with Tabitha Howard wide open under the basket for a layup to tie it up.
&uot;We’ve got Whitney (inside), and that really what we have there (inside),&uot; Chuck Bauerle said. &uot;With Tabitha, she’s just real athletic. It’s a different team this year than we had last year. It’s hard to press the whole game with limited numbers. You can’t do it all ball game.&uot;
The Lady Rebels had to fight midway through the fourth to get back in it, and Yelverton’s three-point play with 4:43 left was a big key. Swinney followed with buckets to tie it up at 38-38 and cap a 7-0 run, and Ariana DeLaSalle and Brittany Gamberi put in buckets later that gave AC that 42-40 lead.
But on the inbounds play Gray said the team had a timeout and could have called it, only to turn it over and give Tensas another shot.
&uot;That’s just inexperienced play under the goal,&uot; Gray said. &uot;We had two timeouts, and I told the girls. But when you’ve never been in that situation, it’s hard to young ladies to react that quick. But I’m proud of them. We’re working a lot on our shooting, and we’re beginning to shoot a little better.&uot;
The score was tied at 22 at halftime before the Adams got a 25-24 lead on a free throw from Gamberi. Then McEachern, Megan Bauerle and Melville knocked down 3-pointers to give Tensas a 33-25 lead.
Melville finished with four 3-pointers.
&uot;Sarah Beth shot the ball really well,&uot; Chuck Bauerle said. &uot;You just can’t rely on that 3-pointer. We played the other night and shot 3 of 20 (from there). It’s not that it’s a secret to it &045; you’ve just got to make baskets.&uot;
