NATCHEZ &045; Grace Anne White looked like she knew all the words to all the songs, but after the third house of caroling the 6-year-old revealed her secret to her mom.
&uot;I just move my mouth,&uot; White said to her mom when she admitted she really didn’t know most of the songs they were singing.
White’s family joined three other families Monday night for their second annual caroling night around downtown Natchez. Friends Elizabeth Turner, Ann Gaude, Shannon McCalip and Wendy White decided to start caroling night last year with a few friends’ houses and some nursing homes.
This year plans grew when the moms and children got together Saturday to bake bread to give away as they caroled.
&uot;It was just something fun for the kids to do,&uot; Turner said. &uot;You get so busy at Christmas, and it becomes about shopping and presents. This is a fun, family and friends activity.&uot;
The moms and kids sang two or three songs at about six downtown houses before piling in cars to drive to grandparents’ houses.
Gaude’s son, Brent, played several guitar solos of Christmas favorites. Brent Gaude said he started playing the guitar at the beginning of the school year and liked the experience of playing in front of people.
&uot;I like being with my friends,&uot; Gaude said of the caroling experience.
Turner said she thought caroling would be a fun memory for the children.
&uot;They are still young enough where this is fun,&uot; Turner said.
&uot;We plan to do it for several more years to come.&uot;
The group said they hadn’t practiced their songs before Monday night, but impromptu practice sessions broke out several times while walking from house to house.
Some houses expected the carolers, others were surprised but all cheered and accepted the bread at the end of the performance.
Wendy White said the moms mainly prepared the bread, but the kids did help decorate the bags and wrap the gifts.
Grace Ann said her favorite song of the night was &uot;Up on the Housetop,&uot; which she learned at school.
