Lady Green Wave falls hard to West Lincoln

NATCHEZ &045; There just wasn’t much to say.
The Lady Green Wave’s game-ending cheer might have given a passing observer the impression things had gone well for Cathedral.
Not so much.
Cathedral’s cheer wasn’t one of celebration, though Elizabeth Blackwell’s last second bucket deserved some praise.
No, the Lady Green Wave didn’t have much to cheer about during a 67-21 loss to West Lincoln.
&uot;There’s not much to say. It was just one of those nights,&uot; Cathedral head coach Kathy Graning said. &uot;I still think mentally we’re getting beat, like we think they’re supposed to beat us. We’ve got to get it in our minds that we can win. Eventually we’ll be able to play with that group.&uot;
To add insult to injury, the Lady Bears were less than gracious in victory, laughing repeatedly at Cathedral players during the romp and giving several hard fouls late in the game.
&uot;They were pretty cocky,&uot; Graning said. &uot;I told our girls, when we get that good, we’re not going to act like that. I don’t care, there’s just no place for laughing like that. We let it get under our skin.&uot;
As for the game, it was forgettable. By the end of the first quarter, one in which Cathedral was outscored 19-1, it was all but over. The final three periods were just for show.
Cathedral upped its scoring in each of the four quarters, but couldn’t hold the Lady Bears in any quarter. In West Lincoln’s worst quarter, the fourth, the Lady Bears scored 10 points, one more than the nine the Green Wave managed.
Turnovers killed the Lady Green Wave’s chances, something that is becoming a familiar sight for Cathedral fans this season. To combat a stifling West Lincoln press, Graning inserted three ballhandlers, Haley Whittington, Caitlin Huffines and Aisha Sanders, for some of the game.
But the turnovers continued, as did missed shots for the Lady Green Wave.
&uot;Turnovers killed us,&uot; Graning said. &uot;We’re going to work on shooting. The teams we should have beat this year, the Pelahatchie, MSD and St. Als, we didn’t shoot well.&uot;
For West Lincoln, the game provided a good chance to work on playing hard and get some time for young players.
&uot;You don’t want to run up the score, but you tell your girls to keep on playing hard,&uot; West Lincoln head coach Lane Young said. &uot;It’s good to get everybody in the game. I need to see some improvement in our younger players, and that won’t happen unless they play.&uot;
