SICILY ISLAND, La. &045; There’s one thing Ferriday girls’ head coach Lisa Abron can count on when her club gets into the Sicily Island tournament.
That’s matching up with Harrisonburg, a team that always gives them a good challenge.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t disappoint on Friday in the finals of the tournament, but the Lady Trojans used a hot fourth quarter to take a 53-47 win to claim the championship.
&uot;They’re well-coached, and I enjoy playing against them,&uot; Abron said. &uot;They’re very competitive. We’ve played them two years in this tournament. They play well together, and they have a very good inside game.&uot;
The Lady Bulldogs are competitive again despite losing a number of seniors from last year. They had a 35-30 lead
over Ferriday heading into the fourth quarter before the Lady Trojans (15-2) got hot in the fourth by going to their man-to-man defense.
Ferriday outscored Harrisonburg 24-12 in the fourth quarter to take the win.
&uot;I think they were tired,&uot; Abron said. &uot;They had played earlier in the day, also. They had just seven players. We were tired, also, but we kind of out-lasted them in the fourth quarter. We played zone most of the game and went to a man-to-man, and fatigue set in.&uot;
The Lady Bulldogs led14-8 after one and 23-18 at halftime before outscoring Ferriday 12-11 in the third quarter.
Jameca Garrison led Ferriday with 25 points. Jasmine Dunbar led Harrisonburg with 20.
Ferriday advanced to the title game with a 48-24 win over Delhi. Kiawanna
McDowell led the Lady Trojans with 17 points.
