NATCHEZ &045; Already outmanned in personnel, Ferriday’s Lady Trojans finally found a seam and put together a 6-0 run midway through the second quarter.
Then Natchez High made their subs. The Lady Bulldogs brought in a fresh five players &045; again.
The Class 2A Lady Trojans don’t have that luxury and have to play a number of underclassmen. So the Lady Bulldogs kept rotating fresh legs in, never quit with the defensive pressure and left with a 78-41 win over the Lady Trojans.
&uot;Their defense was smothering us half to death,&uot; Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron said. &uot;We weren’t able to recognize when a double-team was coming. You’ve got to get rid of the ball and get it to the middle, but we wanted to go to the corners and stop. It was turnovers in the beginning. I knew depth was going to be an issue. We only have nine, and six of those nine play. They were rotating in and out five at a time.&uot;
The Lady Bulldogs (9-8) rotated just about everyone except their post players &045; namely Jasmine Woods. Delequa Drake ran into foul trouble, but Woods kept getting the ball down low and finishing against a Ferriday team that had a junior and sophomore on the block.
Woods finished with 21 points, including 11 in the third quarter.
&uot;Jaz and DQ are both playing in spurts,&uot; Natchez High head coach Sue Johnson said. &uot;If we can get them to click in the same game, we’re going to be awesome. Right now we’re not consistent. We need to get more consistency out of our post play. I think that’s going to come in time, too.&uot;
Natchez led 15-2 at the end of the first before the Lady Trojans (16-4) had their best run of the game &045; that 6-0 run with a Jameca Garrison bucket finishing it off to trim the NHS lead to 23-13.
Then Erica Jackson converted a three-point play to stop the run, and the Lady Bulldogs later went into halftime with a 33-15 lead.
In the third the Lady Bulldogs pounded it into Woods, who came up with a three-point play early for a 36-19 lead. She came up with a bucket on a putback at the 3:21 mark to put the lead at 50-22 and another with 30 seconds left for a 58-25 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
