NEW YORK &045; Former Natchez High track standout Janice Davis is certainly doing well for herself in her second year at Stanford.
The sprinter qualified in first place in the 60-meter dash at the prestigious Millrose Games track meet Friday. Her time of 7.32 seconds was the best in the nation this year, but that was just the beginning for Davis.
She went on to win the event Friday night in 7.34 seconds, just off her time from the afternoon preliminary heats.
&uot;I was excited, it wasn’t my best race, my start wasn’t that good,&uot; Davis said. &uot;I was hoping to go 7.2 (seconds), but my start wasn’t that great.&uot;
The meet will be televised nationally on NBC at 1 p.m. today.
For Davis, it was a particularly good sign to be running such times at this early point in the season. To automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, she needs to run a 7.27, but she said that she’s confident she will be able to meet that mark, probably next week.
Davis said just competing in the event, held at Madison Square Garden, was exciting.
&uot;When I got there I was like, ‘Whoa, this is a lot of people,’&uot; Davis said. &uot;It was like a carnival and in Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks play. But once I get in the blocks, I don’t even notice that.&uot;
It’s been a busy week for Davis. Not only is she in New York for the track meet, it’s also right in the middle of her midterms for school.
&uot;I have all this work to do with midterms and projects, and it’s hard to get it done,&uot; Davis said. &uot;I’m trying not to worry about that stuff while I’m at a meet.&uot;
