BROOKHAVEN &045; Peter Arnold’s bad feelings coming into the game just got worse.
The Cathedral Green Wave fell into another close game with Bogue Chitto, but this time the Bobcats got the momentum in the fourth quarter to put the game away and pull the upset of the No. 3-seeded Green Wave.
The No. 6 seed Bogue Chitto came away with a 55-51 at the Division 7-1A tournament to clinch at least a spot in the playoffs. The Green Wave ended its season 10-15.
&uot;It was the kind of game that makes coaches go nuts,&uot; Arnold said. &uot;I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. We played them three times, and every game went down to the wire. We played 10 games like that, and we won six. We didn’t play all that well tonight, but we still had opportunities to win the game.
&uot;I’m just disappointed for my seniors. I kind of feel like I let them down because I felt like we under-achieved a little bit.&uot;
The Green Wave led 26-22 at halftime before the Bobcats (5-20) got on a little roll and trimmed the lead in the third to 38-37 heading into the fourth quarter. The Green Wave cut the lead down to two and went to the line, but the shots didn’t go and the team was called for a foul on the rebound.
The Bobcats went down and made one, and Matt Goss came up empty on a 3-point attempt on the other end. The Green Wave had to foul, and Bogue Chitto made one of two to close it out.
&uot;I knew it was going to be a dogfight,&uot; Arnold said. &uot;They came in playing well. They picked up the defensive intensity, and we turned the ball over a few times. I think we led by 11, but the momentum swung the other way. They made some plays.&uot;
Matthew Hall led Cathedral with 18 points. Antwain Lyons led BC with 22.
Tensas girls 52, Deer Creek 29
MARKS &045; The Lady Chiefs continue to come up big on defense, and that’s what it takes at this point in the season.
Deer Creek jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the start of the game, but from there Tensas (23-6) jumped right back with a full-court man defense that set the tone from there on out. The Lady Chiefs outscored Deer Creek 14-6 in the second quarter for a 24-17 lead at halftime before pulling away.
The Lady Chiefs will play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against the winner of today’s Rebul-Newton County winner.
&uot;We played an excellent defensive ball game the whole way,&uot; Tensas head coach Chuck Bauerle said. &uot;Whitney Alford played great. They were an inside team, and we basically took it away. Early in the second half we were up seven and they scored two buckets, and after that we shut them down. I don’t know if it was our best effort of the year, but it was one of our best so far.&uot;
The Lady Chiefs pulled away in that third quarter to outscore Deer Creek 15-7 and lead 39-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
They kept it in double figures and eventually forced Deer Creek to abandon its man and go into a zone defense.
Alford had 12 rebounds, and Megan Bauerle led the team with 16 points.
&uot;They just basically shut down in the fourth quarter,&uot; Chuck Bauerle said. &uot;They had just about given up. We just played a good ball game and kind of wore them down at time went on. I’m real pleased, and we feel really good right now.&uot;
