Hicks gets solid outing on mound as Cathedral downs West Lincoln

WEST LINCOLN &045; As the Cathedral Green Wave storms its way through Division 7-1A for a second straight season, it at least affords the team a chance to develop pitching.

Preston Hicks got his turn Saturday.

In his first start Feb. 18, the senior pitched all five innings in a 14-2 win over West Lincoln in five innings. The game lasted only five innings, which was good for Hicks since the plan didn’t including him going much further than five.

Hicks held the Bears to five hits, but he settled down as the game went on and got all three outs on strikeouts in the fifth.

&uot;He struggled early with this control,&uot; CHS head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot; But we played pretty good defense behind him. We made the plays when we needed to. It’s been six weeks. He’s been able to start throwing a little bit at practice, but he’s still battling injuries with his ankle and a p inched nerve in his back. I was glad to see him get five innings in.&uot;

The Green Wave (8-0, 17-2) struggled a little out of the gate with a run in each of the first two innings before putting up five in the third for a 7-1 lead. Andrew Ellard doubled to lead off, Hicks singled and Jeremy Davis walked to load the bases before Ellard scored on a passed ball and Charlie Lane singled in Hicks.

Zack Calhoun’s groundout to short scored Davis, and Chris Rasco homered to score Lane.

Hicks also clubbed a solo homer in the second.

Parklane 19, Trinity Episcopal 8

NATCHEZ &045; The Saints got rolling early and got an impressive lead on the Class AAA Pioneers before the visitors came back with a rally in the late innings to take the game in seven innings.

The Saints led 6-4 after three and 7-6 after four before Parklane scored five in the fifth, four in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Stevan Ridley homered for Trinity, while Zach Rogel had a triple. Bubba Boggs had two doubles for Parklane, and Judd Honea had two triples.

Centreville 8, Bowling Green 2

CENTREVILLE &045; The Tigers set the stage for a decisive week coming up in District 4-AA with the win over Bowling Green Saturday.

Centreville (5-1, 12-5) got three runs in the first to take the quick lead over the Buccaneers and tacked on four more in the fourth. It was enough room to work for starter Josh Lanehart, who went the distance while striking out six and walking only two.

The Tigers got three in the first as Jeffrey Delee tripled with Brad Blades and Tal Priest on base and later scored on a Jake Peairs sacrifice fly.
