Some road trip.

Tecumseh, Okla., came into Vidalia this week as one of two teams from Oklahoma invited to the Vidalia Invitational this weekend. So far the trip has resulted in lots of practice indoors at the VHS gym as everyone waits on what the weather will do.

They’ll have to wait another day. The Invitational won’t go on today as planned, and action will begin Friday instead as the Vikings’ field dries out after Wednesday’s downpour.

&uot;It’s holding water,&uot; Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;It used to be where it would ran a day and we’d play the next day, but we’re not getting that anymore. With the way the rain has fallen every other day, I think we have hit on the field three times this year. We’re not getting much practice and work done. It’s just been frustrating. It’ll be a full two-day job to get that field ready for Friday.&uot;

The weather pushed everything back to Friday for the third version of the Invitational &045; one that won’t include regulars Bridge Creek, Okla., or Camden-Fairview, Ark. Instead, Tecumseh and Hobart are in out of Oklahoma along with Franklin Parish, Cathedral and Monterey.

Bridge Creek head coach Sonny Clay &045; the former coach at Huntington &045; couldn’t line up the trip but found a replacement in Hobart, whose coach is Clay’s former assistant. Then Tecumseh caught word of the tournament and latched on.

Tecumseh plays Franklin Parish at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the first game. Hobart and Franklin Parish will follow, and Vidalia will face Tecumseh in the nightcap.

&uot;He (the Hobart coach) enjoyed coming and wanted to bring Hobart down here,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;With Tecumseh, Sonny had mentioned to him about a tournament in Louisiana. Their coach called and asked if I would mind if he could come. We have a lot of people who don’t normally come to ball games who just want to see what Oklahoma does. It brings something different to this area.&uot;

Cathedral and Monterey will play at 2 p.m. Saturday. Monterey was scheduled to play Hobart’s B team, but that game got scratched late Thursday.

Tecumseh and Hobart will start at 10 a.m. with Vidalia and Hobart squaring off at noon. Vidalia and Franklin Parish will play the final game at 4 p.m.

The Vikings come into the Invitational at least hitting better than they did in that loss last weekend to False River. It’s a matter of getting everyone hitting well, and right now three or four are almost exclusively carrying the load.

&uot;We’re not hitting above-average high school pitching very well,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;Average to below average, we hit the ball. For some reason, above-average pitching is giving us problems. We’ve got about three hitting the ball, and the rest are really struggling.&uot;

Cathedral will take the field Saturday after hopefully getting its game tonight with Bogue Chitto in. Wednesday’s Cathedral-St. Aloysius contest got scratched and will be made up at 7 p.m. March 31 in a varsity-only meeting.

The varsity will begin at 7 p.m. today following the B team game.

Trinity Episcopal will also juggle its schedule from the rainout Tuesday. The Saints’ home contest with Centreville will be Friday with a B team game at 4:30 and varsity at 6:30 p.m.

The Silliman contest that was rained out last week after one inning will be resumed at 4 p.m. Wednesday back at Chester Willis Field.
