VIDALIA &045;&045; Thus far, it’s been a good year for Concordia Parish farmers, parish County Agent Glen Daniels said.

But don’t count your bushels of soybeans before they’re done harvesting &045;&045; there’s still a ways to go. Daniels said most farmers are in the middle of harvesting grain crops &045;&045; corn, sorghum and rice &045;&045; and a number of soybean varieties are just about ripe for harvesting too.

The soybeans in particular could use a little more rain to ensure a good harvest, Daniels said.

&uot;The late beans need a little more rain to get a good number,&uot; Daniels said.

Grain products could be a big moneymaker this year for Concordia Parish farmers, he said. With drought conditions across large sections of the Midwest, where much of the world’s grain is produced.

&uot;The yield just won’t be there in the Midwest,&uot; Daniels said. &uot;I think soybeans and corn will work in our favor. I expect prices to swing back up.&uot;

Soybean prices were as high as $7 a bushel a few weeks ago, but have gone back to about $6.50 &045;&045; still a good price &045;&045; recently.

Cotton, meanwhile, is also looking good this season, Daniels said. It won’t be ready for picking for two or three more weeks, but the plants are in good shape.

&uot;The cotton blooms are just starting to open up in a lot of places, but it looks good,&uot; Daniels said.

But until all the crops are in, there’s only one thing to do, Daniels said.

&uot;I pray we’ll be blessed with a good year and we’ll get a good crop and a good price,&uot; Daniels said.
