FERRIDAY &045; A simple white cross stands just a few feet from the spot where Fredrick Ron Lollis was killed Aug. 23, 2004.
There are a few bouquets of flowers placed by family members at the foot of the wooden cross, which has the Lord’s Prayer written on it.
More than 60 people gathered around the cross beside Doty Road for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night to remember Lollis, who was shot to death by a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s deputy one year ago.
The Rev. Justin Conner, president of the Concordia NAACP, led those gathered in religious songs and prayer to remember Lollis.
Lollis’ mother Ruby was one of those who remembered her son Tuesday night.
&uot;He was a good, sweet, humble, hard-working kid. He supported his family,&uot; Ruby Lollis said. &uot;That was my baby, and I dearly miss him. I think about him every day when I get up and when I go down.&uot;
Lollis was killed by sheriff’s Deputy David Hedrick after allegedly pointing a gun at Hedrick.
Hedrick was cleared of all charges by state and federal government agencies that investigated the incident.
The Lollis family has contended that Lollis was not armed.
The Lollis family filed a lawsuit seeking more than $13 million against the sheriff’s office, Sheriff Randy Maxwell, Hedrick and an insurance company in U.S. District Court in Alexandria earlier this week.
&uot;I know justice will be done,&uot; Ruby Lollis said.
Conner encouraged those in attendance to join the NAACP, which used its resources to encourage agencies to investigate the incident.
Conner also said that Lollis’ death should provide reason for local residents to become involved in the organization and fight to make things better for black people in Concordia Parish.
&uot;We want to say to our brother here that your dying is not in vain,&uot; Conner said.
