NATCHEZ &045; Don’t dust this one off only being a jamboree.

You might get an argument out of Natchez High’s Bulldogs after Friday night. The Bulldogs looked sharp on offense by scoring six touchdowns against Callaway in the controlled scrimmage to take the win in their first workout of the jamboree.

The Bulldogs squared away against Wilkinson County in the nightcap that did not get under way until well after 10 p.m.

The Bulldogs cashed in on four plays when they operated from the 25-yard line. Each team was given 12 plays from their own 40, 12 more from the other team’s 40 and six from the other team’s 25.

The passing game clicked from the 25 while running backs Latarus Frazier and Brandon Lewis gained significant yardage. Lewis scored on the first play on a 25-yard run, and on the next play Jason Bruce hit Dekeedrian Jackson on a 25-yard touchdown pass that put the score at 24-6.

Two plays later Bruce hit Edward Johnson in the back in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown. Bruce followed that up three plays later with a 16-yard touchdown run that put the score at 36-6.

The Bulldogs clicked for most of the scrimmage with 148 yards rushing on 18 plays and 94 yards passing. They had just two turnovers &045; one interception and one fumble &045; while punching it in every time they got inside the 10.

Callaway stuck with the passing game for nearly the entire workout coming off an 18-18 tie with Wilkinson County in the first varsity workout. Of their 27 penalty-free plays from scrimmage, the Chargers threw it 23 times with Terrance Barnes connecting on 16 and 24 yards with Cole Michael.

But at times the Bulldogs’ defense contained Callaway by making the tackles, pressuring the quarterback and covering the receivers. The Chargers couldn’t get past the Natchez 45 on their first possession when they started from their own 40.

In the opening game with Wilkinson County and Callaway, Barnes had better success throwing the ball and the Chargers moved the ball more efficiently on the ground.

Barnes hit Michael on a 24-yard touchdown pass for the first score as the Charges went up 18-6. But the Wildcats scored twice while on the CHS 25, including David Dawson TD passes of 16 yards to Leroyal Lanus and 25 yards to Cameron Russ.
