As gas prices continue to rise, many people across the Miss-Lou and the nation are fearful the cost increases will affect their personal bottom line.
With increased demand and continuing instability in the Middle East,
we can probably expect high gas prices for quite a while.
But experts offer several tips on how to make the most of a tank of gas.
4Use the most energy-conserving vehicle you own as much as possible.
4Consolidate trips and errands to cut down on driving time and number of miles driven.
4Find one location where you can take care of all or most of your errands. Comparison shop by phone, Internet or through newspaper advertisements to cut down on driving time.
4Slow down. The faster you go, the more fuel you use. Remember, however, that traveling slower than the flow of traffic can cause a safety hazard.
4Lighten the load. Don’t haul extra weight in the passenger compartment or trunk. A heavier vehicle uses more fuel.
Driving style also can impact the amount of gasoline motorists use, experts say. Tips to reduce gasoline use include:
4Knowing the correct starting procedure for your car. Racing an engine to warm it up wastes fuel.
4Maintaining steady speeds. A car uses extra fuel when it accelerates.
4Minimizing the need to brake by anticipating traffic conditions. Be alert for slow-downs and red lights.
4Using the air conditioner only when necessary. Air conditioning reduces fuel economy by about 5 percent.
We will likely have to get used to higher gas prices, but these tips could help save money.
