VIDALIA &045; Step by step, Vidalia is coming closer to getting its own Wal-Mart.
The Vidalia Board of Aldermen’s vote Tuesday night to change the zoning on a piece of land along U.S. 84 was the most recent step. The land, until recently a corn field, was rezoned for commercial use.
Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said the town is still in talks with Wal-Mart, but the company has not committed to building a new store.
&uot;As far as signing documents or anything like that &045; it’s not done yet,&uot; Copeland said.
A public hearing about Wal-Mart’s intentions to open a store in the city will be held in October, Copeland said.
The town has had talks with several other businesses about potentially locating new stores around the Wal-Mart, should it come to Vidalia.
&uot; We’ve had interest, but a lot of that is predicated on Wal-Mart going there first,&uot; Copeland said.
