SELMA, Ala. &045; Temporary housing is available in Alabama State parks and it is open to anyone from an affected zip code, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials confirmed.

As of Wednesday, there were 428 trailers and campers awaiting occupation in 13 parks around the state. In order to move in, an evacuee must have a FEMA registration number and be eligible for temporary housing.

&8221;We have trailers here that are ready for occupation,&8220; FEMA Public Information Officer Don North said from the Montgomery, Ala. field office.

The participating state parks are listed on www.alapark.com. A link on the homepage directs visitors to information regarding evacuee housing. The 13 parks, their contact information and number of available units are listed. The numbers are updated daily.

A call to several participating parks confirmed there is housing available. While available to evacuees from any Katrina-affected county or parish, reservations are not accepted over the phone. But the process is quick and easy.

&8221;We have 30 campers ready, people are not being put in at a fast rate,&8220; Roland Cooper State Park manager Micky Luker said from Camden.

&8221;As long as they are registered with FEMA, they can come in and fill out the paperwork. If they pass the background check, we’ll get them moved in that day.&8220;

Parks reported the groceries and home wares are available near the parks.

All an evacuee has to do it get to the park.

The reason for the ease, North said, is due to availability.

&8221;There’s a shortage of sites in Louisiana and Mississippi,&8220; he said. &8221;In Alabama, we don’t have a site problem.&8220;

That there is no site problem in Alabama is courtesy of Governor Bob Riley’s offering the state parks for use.

As for the prospect of trailers in Mississippi and Louisiana, there are two industrial parks in Selma being used as staging points for mobile housing. As of Wednesday, there were approximately 2,600 trailers in Selma awaiting shipment to Mississippi and Louisiana.

The Disaster Recovery Center in Selma is referring people on to state parks for housing, manager Matt Sackwitz said.
