Vidalias Wal-Mart not certain

VIDALIA &8212; Vidalia is on a list leaked to media outlets of several hundred new Wal-Marts planned for the coming year.
But that doesn&8217;t mean anything has been decided, Wal-Mart officials said Friday.
&8220;I think the value of this list is limited. It&8217;s not the accurate list of the sites that we plan to build in the coming year, that&8217;s another list. Essentially, this is a list of possibilities,&8221; company spokesman Marty Heires said.
Wal-Mart and the city of Vidalia have been discussing building a Supercenter on U.S. 84 for some time. Land has been re-zoned to suit the store; all the city is waiting on is Wal-Mart to commit.
They&8217;ll have to wait a little longer, according to Regional Community Affairs Manager Kimberly Randall.
&8220;At this time, we don&8217;t have any definite plans regarding that market,&8221; Randall said. &8220;We are continuously, on a regional basis, assessing our property opportunities in order to best serve our customers.&8221;
According to the list, which was obtained by the anti-Wal-Mart group Sprawl-Busters and given to its sister group Wal-Mart Watch as well as The Associated Press, the largest company in the world has done just that.
Sprawl-Busters and Wal-Mart Watch are opposed to Wal-Mart&8217;s expansion and operating policies.
The Vidalia site is classified as a relocation, which many in the Miss-Lou think would mean the end of the Ferriday Wal-Mart.
Randall denied the Ferriday store was in danger.
&8220;That is not something that has been determined,&8221; she said.
There are 484 new locations listed in the expansion plan, almost 100 more than Wal-Mart had announced in an October expansion release.
Hieres said that doesn&8217;t mean the company is trying to catch anybody off guard.
&8220;This is a list of possible sites for the next 12-14 months,&8221; he said. &8220;This list is for planning purposes, and at any given time, there are probably about 20 percent more sites on it than will actually be built during the year.&8221;
In other words, don&8217;t be surprised if 100 of those stores don&8217;t get built.
On Oct. 24, Wal-Mart released its 2006 expansion plan that called for between 335-370 new stores to open in the United States. The release did not name specific cities being targeted for a new store.
&8220;The numbers we gave out in October, those are the accurate numbers,&8221; Heires said.
The list gives a size for the each potential store and dates of possession for current and last month.
On the list, the Vidalia location has a zero for its size &8212; one of 86 stores listed so &8212; and a possession date of Sept. 11, 2006. It is one of 87 stores that have no possession date listed for last month.
