Developers mum on their hotel plans

NATCHEZ &8212; Developers proposing to build hotels across Canal Street from the convention center are mum on the details of their plans, at least for now.

City Attorney Walter Brown has also declined to provide copies of the proposals aldermen opened last month. His argument: such documents are protected from disclosure under the state&8217;s Open Records Act until one of the proposals is accepted. But a source close to process said at least two of the three proposals would include more development than just a hotel.

A 120-hotel proposed by Thomas J. Bauer of New Orleans would take up the entire block bordered by Franklin, Broadway and Main streets and have parking enclosed inside the building. Adding 80 more rooms at a later date is also a possibility, Bauer has said.

Bauer told aldermen in their Nov. 28 meeting he&8217;s also interested in rehabilitating the former First Baptist Church building on Main Street into apartments.

But apparently, his plans also include retail development on Main Street, although details of such a development weren&8217;t available as of press time.

Glen Simmons, a Natchez native now in Atlanta, has grander plans, potentially including:

A performing arts center and jazz/blues walk on Broadway.

A city park where the Canal Street post office now stands.

A &8220;Huck Finn Lazy River&8221; near the river&8217;s edge.

That&8217;s in addition to a 90- to 120-room Hilton Garden Inn on Canal Street.

Neither Bauer nor Simmons would confirm what their proposed developments would include. Bauer said he would divulge more plans Monday and would be present at Tuesday&8217;s aldermen meeting.

&8220;I feel like I shouldn&8217;t comment until someone&8217;s (proposal) is selected,&8221; Simmons said.

But Simmons did say two factors, in addition to his being from the area, made Natchez an attractive place to locate such a hotel. &8220;The convention center they&8217;ve built is a really nice facility with the capacity for larger conventions, and Natchez has gotten a lot more attention after Hurricane Katrina,&8221; Simmons said.

Officials of Akshar LLC, whose principal is a doctor from El Dorado, Ark., could not be reached for details of the proposal that firm submitted.
