Vidalia sports building plans change

VIDALia &8212; It&8217;s back to the drawing board for the Vidalia High School sports building project, literally.
The Concordia Parish School Board approved a motion Tuesday night to hire an architect to draw up building plans, which will be carried out by a contracted construction team.
The motion scrapped previous plans to use donated money, materials and labor to complete the project. The Concordia Parish Sheriff&8217;s Office and the Town of Vidalia had offered to provide the labor and some materials for the project.
Yet, cost estimates were still coming in higher than what the district is legally allowed to spend without taking bids.
Now, the building will be constructed in the same manner that most district projects are handled. The money to fund it will have to come from capital outlay dollars, and will cost more than $100,000.
School board members from Vidalia have argued for several months that the building is worth the expense and very much needed.
It will include dressing areas, locker rooms and a weight room. Currently the athletes change and lift weights in cramped spaces and hallways.
Board member Jerry Roberts said he wanted to notify those who had agreed to donate and thank them, even though it will no longer be needed.
The board will get needed drawings, take bids and set a construction timetable after that.
In other business:
The board also agreed to advertise for bids to have a new roof placed on the entire Ferriday Band Hall building, a building completed over the summer.
And, approved a motion to advertise for bids for a new air conditioning unit and roof for Ridgecrest Elementary, and for a new roof on the Vidalia Upper Elementary School gym.
